A Typology of Young Cocoa Farmers: Attitudes, Motivations and Aspirations

This paper presents a typology to highlight and describe the variation in attitudes among young farmers rural Ghana, group that has been treated policy discourses development practice as largely homogenous. It further identifies motivations aspirations associated with each type. A cluster analysis of survey data from 120 respondents yielded two types farmers: ‘positive’ ‘resigned’. The likelihood being either category was found be related marital status, location, whether one had secondary occupation. Further, more likely report influenced by adult role models aspire stay farming. Our findings underscore relevance socio-economic ecological environment on people’s decisions regarding farming and, consequently, outcome programmatic interventions meant increase their participation agriculture.
